Geodynamic Map of Rodinia now available
As a final product of IGCP 440 and the TSRC, the Geodynamic Map of Rodinia is now published by Elsevier as Appendix I of a paper by Z.X. Li, S.V. Bogdanova, A.S. Collins, A. Davidson, B. De Waele, R.E. Ernst, I.C.W. Fitzsimons, R.A. Fuck, D.P. Gladkochub, J. Jacobs, K.E. Karlstrom, S. Lu, L.M. Natapov, V. Pease, S.A. Pisarevsky, K. Thrane, and V. Vernikovsky (Assembly, configuration, and break-up history of Rodinia: A synthesis. Precambrian Research v. 160, pp. 179–210, 2008; doi:10.1016/j.precamres.2007.04.021). Both the paper, the digital Rodinia Map (in pdf form) and an animation of global palaeogeography between 1100 and 530 Ma, are downloadable from the journal website. The ArcView shape files of the continental blocks used for making the Rodinia Map, all in their present coordinates, are downloadable following link

Preamble
IGCP 440, first led by Professors C.McA. Powell and R. Unrug, sets its aims to produce two sets of tectonic maps: one in 1 : 2 million scale and focuses on individual continent or region, and the other one in 1 : 10 million scale which illustrates the assembly and breakup of Rodinia. The two co-leaders drafted the first version of map legends for both map series in 1999.
Prof. Unrug unfortunately passed away in July 2000. A small meeting was organised by Professor Powell during the 31st IGC at Rio de Janeiro in August 2000 to discuss the map legends.
The meeting was attended by R. Caby, H. Cutten, I. Dalziel, A. Davidson, R. Ernst, D. Evans, R. Fuck, H. Kampunzu, Z. Li, V. Peace, C. Powell (chairperson), V. Puchkov, L. Tack and M. Wingate, and it lasted a full day. It examined the draft legends for both sets of maps, and suggested significant revisions. Professor Powell was to make all changes before trying them out with trial maps.
More discussions on the legends were planned for at the Irkutsk field symposium in Siberia in late July 2001, but Professor Powell sadly passed away on his way to Irkutsk. An IGCP440 business meeting was held during the symposium, chaired by the remaining two co-leaders, Professors S. Bogdanova and H. Kampunzu. The meeting decided that the project should honour the visions of the two founding co-leaders and produce the Rodinia maps.
An IGCP440 business meeting was again held on Monday 1 October 2001 during the Rodinia Symposium held in the Tectonics Special Research Centre (TSRC), Perth, organised by S. Bogdanova (Co-leader) and Z.X. Li (Project Secretary).
The meeting agreed that the project should go ahead with producing the Rodinia maps, but maybe not the 1 : 2 million regional maps due to the limited time and resources available. A half-day meeting took place on Wednesday, 3 October in the Tectonics Laboratory of the TSRC, discussing the scale and the legends for the Rodinia map(s).
The meeting was attended by S. Bogdanova (chairperson), D. Evans, I. Fitzsimons, Z. Li, J. Myers, S. Pisarevsky, B. Windley, with P. Cawood, H. Cutten and A. Kröner attending the early part of it. The meeting further revised the legends for the 1 : 10 (or 1 : 15) million Rodinia map based on the revised version after the Rio de Janeiro meeting.
The meeting also asked S. Bogdanova to form a Steering Committee for the Rodinia Map, and to coordinate further revisions with the Committee members.
